Mentee Spotlight: Perla

Ballet & Books

Every Saturday, Rubi and Perla got really excited for their Ballet & Books session. My oldest daughter, Rubi, used to go to the Ithaca Ballet, but when I became a single mom I could no longer afford it. Having Ballet & Books as an option for low income families was amazing.

Rubi was in the program for two semesters until she turned 9, and she wishes the program could continue for her. Her relationship with her mentor was so beautiful, and the level of attention each child receives is amazing. Through her interactions with her mentor, she was shown how unique and special she was. Her mentor showed her that she is unique, individual, and special. Rubi admires her mentor so much, and through her interactions with her mentor, I’ve watched her gain so much confidence in front of people. In fact, she was so inspired by the program that she wishes to volunteer for Ballet & Books when she is old enough.

For my younger daughter, Perla, the impact was just as amazing. She is a free spirit, and with Ballet & Books she has had an outlet for her creativity. Ballet & Books helps her showcase her talent for dance and art, and the individualized attention that she gets with her mentor has allowed her to grow. With Ballet & Books, each child is made to feel that they are happy, active, and special. Ballet and Books is made with love and a lot of patience that inspires young children.
